Glen GoodKnight
Nov. 6th, 2010 11:01 amBack in 1968 when I took the giant step from reading science fiction and fantasy (of which there wasn't much around except Tolkien...) and joined the world of fandom, I met Glen GoodKnight. He had founded a group of fans interested in Tolkien (and Lewis and Williams) who dressed up as characters from the books, and held picnics and conventions. That was all super and I loved it. He called his group the Mythopoeic Society - and I had to look up the word to see what it meant. But the big thing was that these people read. And they read more deeply and with more thought than any people I had ever met before. Glen, by example and discussion, widened my world and peopled it with more authors and characters and thoughts than I would ever have managed on my own. He died this week. I miss having him in my world and look forward to seeing him in the next.
