Fall is lovely here in Colorado. But fast. This weekend will be the "color" weekend in the mountains, and then the color will be gone. Here at my office we have a little row of twelve matching small trees - five or six years old - and yesterday when i came in at 6am one of the twelve was bright yellow, and the others all full green. this morning at 6:30 the yellow one was still shining out and one more of the twelve was half gone over into gold. i'm heading for california on saturday to see my sister for a week and fully expect that when i return on 6 october that the whole row will be through their cycle and the leaves fallen.

Which means we have about one more week for tomatoes. The growing season at this height in Colorado is quite short - we can't put veggies out into the garden until almost Memorial Day, and even if we start them inside, we still don't get ripe fruit until later in August. So August and September are the tomato gluttony months when we eat them sliced, in soup, in sauce, stuffed with tuna, in salads, or with some balsamic vinegar and slices of fresh mozzerella. By the first week in October the temps are too low at night and not high enough in the afternoon so the ripening process stops and it's either pick the green tomatoes or let the birds have them.
