it's early in the morning, you are having breakfast, it's a nice day, you have no plans or obligations, and your car is in the driveway full of gas. you get a phone call from a buddy you haven't seen since college. but when you were in school together you were fairly close, had many similar interests and classes, and read a lot of the same books. your buddy - who has been working as a very senior person in a big corporation for several years - is just getting on a plance. your chum has been working on a major project 60 hours a week for the last year with no vacation and no time for anything, and done very little reading for a number of years before that. this morning your buddy is on the way to a two-week vacation at a small island resort with no tv, no shopping, no telephone, no computers - just beach and food and tall fruity drinks. so your friend is going to be landing at your local airport to change planes at lunchtime, and wants you to meet there and pass over five paperback books to read on the island. luggage space is very limited on the final small plane and there's only room for these five paperback books. what do you choose?

To Say Nothing Of The Dog -- Connie Willis
Memoirs of a Geisha -- William Golden
The Lady -- Anne McCaffrey
The Eyre Affair -- Jasper Fforde
Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone -- J.K. Rowling

These are all books that, for some reason, I find myself re-reading at semi-regular intervals.

Though I have to admit, if I had that kind of vacation planned, I'd rather spend time writing than reading ... :)
