Raise

Let's see if I can re-create some of my meanderings on my raise. I got told a couple days ago that I did get a raise this year. Haven't gotten one in three years. Raises were not very prevalent this year, so I feel good that I got one. I don't get much feedback from my management in Orlando, so this made me think maybe they actually know I am alive and like what I do.

Back in the early days with my company I got yearly raises and twice-yearly bonuses as a matter of course. Everyone did. It built morale beautifully. Then things got tighter, and raises and bonuses got fewer. So I'm taking this as a good sign for the future.

But what should I do with my raise, ah, there's the question. My daughter's answer was quick and clear, "Go shopping!" she said. But I'm not really into shopping just to shop. It's not such a big raise that I can buy a well for a village in Africa, but bigger than just taking my sweetie out to dinner. And in my paycheck tomorrow I get it retroactively since 1 July. So I feel I ought to do something to celebrate.

So far, I have sent my sister a card telling her that I've raised her allotment. If I get a raise, she should get a raise. She's handicapped and housebound. Then I sent a note to CCF telling them to buy a flock of chickens for my little girl in Angola. Now I'm looking lustfully through book catalogs and with more than casual interest through the seven million four hundred and three holiday catalogs that are landing in my mailbox each and every afternoon.

But I'm kind of looking for something cool to do. Any suggestions?

I know this is hard to believe, but since Robin and Fred moved out, we actually have empty space in bookshelves.

then buy more books!!!!

Or buy some vacation time to move the books around into some arcane organization scheme.

Better yet!!! Hire a library student to create a cataloging scheme for your books. The student would get internship credits and you would get a customized schema for your library.

Damn. Wish I were in the market.
