i took off work a little early and went to see the star trek movie (does it even have a name?) on monday afternoon. everyone had told me it was wonderful. well, it was wonderful.

i think that gene would have been happy with it. the characters were just short of uncanny in their occasional flashes of resemblance to the originals. how on earth did they get someone who LOOKED like christopher pike? I need to go back and see it again to try and figure out if the resemblances are physical or done with very careful attention to nuances of expression. the attention to detail was exceptional. and when the guy with the red shirt on sat down next to kirk, well, you just KNEW. the only thing missing, sadly, was the voice of majel barrett - and i'm going to listen carefully the second time through to see if it isn't buried somewhere in a computer response.

this is an action film, it starts and doesn't stop once. there's a tad of drinking, but no one takes time to eat, sleep, or go to the bathroom.

if you haven't seen it, go see it. and plan on seeing it a second time, and maybe a third, on the big screen. you are going to want to. really. you will.

Saw it last night. Loved it. Very good interpretations of the original characters -- and I liked the idea they lifted from Diane Carey's novel that Kirk was a bit of a troublemaker as a teen. I liked the conflict/respect dynamic between Kirk and Spock, and I liked that the supporting characters -- Uhura, Sulu and Chekhov -- ALSO had important talents that were important to the story. Karl Urban was really channeling McCoy there. And it was good to see Leonard Nimoy again.

Definitely worth seeing again, and I probably will. (And I just got the first season of the Original Series on DVD - the enhanced version -- it's been a LONG time since I've seen it...)
