while going through photos at christmas i found, amazingly, one of my family on the Fouth of July in 1956 (or possibly 1957) that goes well with the post i did last fourth of july. is there a way i can associate it with that post? and how o i take a picture i've loaded and put it up on my LJ?

You can edit the post to add the picture, if you want. But most people won't see it because the post is so old, it won't show up on their friend's list. But you could make a new post linking back to the old post, if you want people to find it quickly right now.
And if you go "Home" - I know, most of us don't either - you should see a side (or top) bar that has Journal, Profile, Friends, Scrapbook. Scrapbook is where you can load in any pictures you want to associate with LJ posts. Note - If you've already "posted" pictures before, you will find them there, too.
