I was changing clothes to head out to lunch on Friday when Terry called me to come quick quick to the kitchen. Two mountain lions calmly walked across the street in front of a car that stopped to let them stroll by, up the driveway across from us, and then up through the scrub and pines towards the top of the hill. We went out in the driveway and watched them until they disappeared. In the almost 19 years I have lived in this house I have seen foxes, coyotes, bears, bobcats, and innumerable deer, but never before lions - although I knew they were around.

Wow! Every once in a while the neighbors will report seeing signs, but it's pretty rare. Five or six years ago I think I heard one at night: very impressive.

That beats moose in the yard (which we've had), definitely. The closest bear sign we've ever seen was tracks down by a dumpster near the school.

There are, officially, no mountain lions in the north country (lynx, yes, them we can haz) -- but hunters periodically report finding scat anyway.

Good thing Miss Sappho came back in!

The only thing we get in our yard are raccoons, squirrels, and a skunk...

Much as I like to think of myself as a conservationist, I'm not particularly comfortable in the immediate presence of predators large enough to eat *me* if they take a mind to. Walking through my yard would definitely qualify as too close.
