Back from SMOFcon
Dec. 5th, 2016 06:17 pmKent and I attended SMOFcon in Chicago this last weekend.
He attended more than I did because I'm still working (for another month...) and couldn't get away until Friday afternoon. It was an excellent con! They didn't try to do anything different or spectacular. There were no tinker toys or legos. Everything was quite straightforward and the top people talked about the things that they know how to do best. Enjoyed seeing lots of old friends. We had dinner Sunday night with John Sapienza and with my son Val and his new roommate Anjara. The flights, on United, were crowded and cramped and nasty.
I'm getting ready for Christmas - the whole family is coming - and also winding down the last weeks at work. I'm deleting files and emails that are fifteen and more years old. I don't want 'em anymore and surely no one else does. It's somewhat depressing because it's quite clear that the corporate entity is not going to replace me but will expect my team to take on all of my work. A year ago when I went out for cancer surgery my team was five people and an actively working manager - so six. One person changed teams, our manager left the organization, the new manager has his own irons in the fire and is neither qualified or interested in the work we do. So six people's work is now begin done by four people and when I leave it will be three people. I feel really bad for my teammates, but on the other hand - that's the kind of corporate attitude that makes me so glad that I am leaving.
I'm writing this on Live Journal and welcome anyone who wants to follow me here. I'm going to post a link on Facebook, but I am still absolutely NOT reading FB so any comments there will go unseen.
In case anyone is interested, my son Valentine turns 41 this week. How did that happen?
